I recently discovered this poem 'Love After Love' by the famous Caribbean (St. Lucian) poet, writer and playwright Derek Walcott. Being that we have entered a brand new year and everyone is thinking of ways to better themselves and change this and that, I thought this poem was a perfect message to put things into perspective. I fell in love with this piece because it does something that most poems don't do and that's remind you of the importance of loving and appreciating yourself. Most love poems are about longing for or lusting after that special someone. We all know that focusing on or trying to change anything out side of you is agonizing and just plain a waste of time. We get so caught up in trying to make others fall in love with us and appreciate us that we forget the most important person is you, first and foremost. Instead of a bunch of nonsense New Years resolutions that I'm sure most of you will forget about by February anyways, how about we stop and recap on all the amazing things that make you, you. So for 2012 and beyond how about falling back in love with YOU.
